WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU'RE EXPECTING

Haiku String:

Till I'm sure I've got

the goal, I seldom show my

process for winning

It upsets people

when I don't share the details

cuz they want the tea

But my goals are not

gossip; they need protection

from outside dangers

Like a pregnancy

the fetus is showered with

intentional care

Only folks who can

help mom have a successful

birth are on the team

Gotta be careful

who you give access to your

plans for happiness

Don't be so hyped to

tell folks where you're going; they

might not wish you well

People don't always

like to see you win when they're

on the losing end

Their energy may

be suspect; monitoring

spirits bring envy

A snide remark here,

criticism there, now you

second-guess yourself

Keep your cards close to

your heart, your mouth closed, and your

journey under wraps

Give them the play by

play after you succeed and

they can't steal your shine

ERROR IN JUDGMENT

They think because

I don't bother nobody

and I'm all

Nam-myoho-renge-kyo

and life coaching

about how to maintain

peace of mind...

that I won't

hop out this gentle buggy ride

I'm lettin' them experience

and before they can blink

rudely awaken them

to unevolved me:

Miss Chariot of Fire

She is never more

than a coupla your fuck-ups

away from slittin' your ego

The only reason

you might have time for two

is cuz she's busy

tryna control herself

and make sure she don't

go to jail

or an early grave

behind her reaction

to the first one

Don't git it twisted

Sweet Buggy Ride

has firmly planted roots now

works hard on her disposition

painfully aware of the trouble

she has attracted with it

in the past

knows how to talk

Firestarter off the ledge

keep her flare match-sized

quicker to fizzle

If she lets it

But while her foundation

in the soil

may be strong

at her core

she's still

a hurriquake

so if you wanna

shake things up

fuck around and find out

what happens when

the Buggy Ride stops

then rest assured

she has enough matches

to light a hefty blaze

to the Chariot

and see to it

that you go up in flames

BOTH GLASSES ARE HALF EMPTY

Physical wounds and emotional wounds

require completely different care

To heal a physical wound

is to cover and protect it

salve its bleeding heart

stifle its screams

intervene

so it's not forced onto the battlefield

to fight against the elements

immunocompromised structure

making it a prime target

for raging infection

or sepsis

The physical wound

is a bit of a victim

a poor dear

cry baby

fragile and timid

hands off

for it to get well soon

cuz if you touch it too much

trigger it

before it's outta the woods

your assault will have

dire repercussions

It has already shrieked

"Leave me alone!"

but it's just like you

to not listen

The emotional wound

has disturbing fortitude

zero compassion

wakes up every morning

happily greeting you

with a sword in one hand

and a middle finger

planted between your eyes

its only intention for the day

to slice your self-esteem

into a thousand teeny chunks

hatefully cast them to the floor

watch them scatter and bounce

deep-belly laugh

while jabbing you with its blade

as you dive and scramble after them

like a frenzied dope fiend

trying to gather enough parts

to piece back into yourself

so you can properly handle

the day's crises

That bastard

you absolutely

cannot protect

you gotta bring a gun

to this knife fight

or it will feed on your ego

and mentally cripple you

It has

history and depth

size and strength

knows exactly how

to have you wrapped

in a straitjacket

before 9 a.m.

It is

your all-day abuser

inside job

with outside influence

on the clock 24/7

will never quit on its own

so

you will have to terminate

Show it no mercy

find some courage

snatch its weapon

while it's reaching

for the next heinous move

impale it—

never mind all the gushing blood

it's toxic anyway—

lay it across the table

uncovered

uncomfortable

and

fillet that MF!

don't be scared to touch it

this one

you gotta put hands on

grab fistfuls

of its wicked innards

rip out the unhealthy beliefs

it's had you brainwashed by

remove the cancer

that's been shrinking you

discard the remains

and launch yourself

into full recovery

Physical wounds and emotional wounds

can both kill you

in different ways

Learn how to defend yourself accordingly

BEHIND CLOSED DOORS

Collecting data on my skeletons

while an overcrowded graveyard

rots in your closet

is interesting audacity

Pungent bones twitching with tea

piping hot

ghost-pepper spicy

leaking scandal from their joints

playing Twister in pitch black

plea-pounding against the door

aching to relieve themselves

to betray you

in the most satisfying way

tell the world their names

which book of secrets

they come from

how many chapters

it took for you

to finish doing your dirt

how many characters' spirits

you killed off in the end

relationships you T-boned

with crash-outs

all the lives you lost

in the flesh

inoperable love

splayed in the streets

covered bodies carted off

with the forgiveness

you were suddenly starved for

but would never be nourished by

So you wither

while your closet rumbles

goes bump in the night

causing jittery sleep

skeleton prom in session

dancing around the subject

of your sinning

like you do when you're awake

Sweetheart...

my collection

and your collection

ain't the same

My site is small

properly tended

my past rests peacefully

You might wanna

spend more time

making sure what you did

in the dark

doesn't come to light

cuz while you're distracted

by my crimes

the worst one of yours

finally got loose

and is proudly waiting

in the Netflix documentary chair

PROCESSION

Dragged to goodbye

Row of vehicles

That spells

LOVE

Across its mile-long span

Drivers slow-crawl trailing one another

To the site where all their tears

Will meet for the first

And last time

Acknowledge and nod in confirmation

Of their similarities

No competition over

Drops' size or weight

Crayola-red eyes locking sporadically

Holding just long enough

To apologize for each other's loss

Salt-water-sopped faces

Struggling to make peace

With that last encounter

Words they didn't think

Would be final

Embraces still tingling

In their cells

Honoring how The Departed left them

So whole

Full of dopamine memories

Faith in humanity

But now cracked

Amid the strain of reality

The Departed's absence

Disrespectfully loud

Quietly savage

Taking a toll

None are prepared to pay

Yet here they are

Stalled at the booth

In no rush

To continue the journey

Without their beloved

Pull over

Say a prayer

For The Departed

For the ones

Left in shambles

And you

When time calls

For your departure

Let all roads leading

To your final resting place

Be clear

And may your line of love

Stretch farther than the eye

Can see

IDENTITY

"We'll take joy wherever we can find it." ~Mike Bonifer

When life

Throws you in the ring

Ricochets you

Against the ropes

Body-slams you

Into despair

Out your right mind

Hurls you over

Your capacity's cliff

Tattered frame

Thudding to the ground

Pause

Breathe

And reach for Joy

Take it

Wherever

You can find it

Be childlike about it

Wrap your pudgy little hand

Around its jumbo index finger

And let it lead you

To surroundings where the grass

Is not greener but instead

A spectrum

Of your favorite hues

Where you'll skip off-beat

Trip and fall on repeat

Tumble thru the padded pastures

Snort-laughing loudly

At your clumsy

No injury or shame

Mouth agape

Tongue

Peppered with specks of dirt

After every sprawl

Pop up exuberantly each time

Like a grasshopper on Meth

Take off running

In your mismatched shoes

Cuz Joy never requires perfection

Or uniformity

Doesn't micromanage

How you choose to wield it

How you show up

To the party

Lets you release your grip

On its limb

To venture off for the day

Treasure-hunt yourself

In the peaks and valleys of Earth

Spot the ever-sought rainbow

Cartwheel your way

To the end of it

Discover the promised pot of gold

Peer inside

See your euphoric face

In the reflection of each piece

Toss your head back wildly

And fling your arms open wide

Michael Jackson style

Christmas-Day squeal

At the gift of your existence

The magnitude of your value

The realization that

You were never separated

From Joy

Because it was

You

Leading the journey

It was

You

That you were holding onto

The whole time

Everywhere you go

There you are

JOY!

Standing up to life's fight

With the power of glee

Persistence of peace

Smirk of satisfaction

As you turn away from struggle

On some flex shit

Joy's protective halo on duty

Hula-swirling

And step

Outta the ring

In your mismatched shoes

Multi-toned grass plastered

To the bottoms

Skipping off-beat

To your bliss

ALLEGIANCE

I tote militia poems

in my mouth

spider-webbed 'round my teeth

threaded thru the lining

of my cheeks

specially seasoned

for Serenity Brigade

atten-HUT positioned

for enemy-seizing commands

Unity-slingin' hate rebels

prowlin' the streets

of my trachea

charged with adrenaline

lurkin' in the dusk

of my voicebox

Never see me comin'

but you feel the air

suddenly shift

hear my aura

tiptoe across the sky

when I'm near

eerie hush before ambush

alarming temperature increase

You know it's me

Faucet-dripping those icicles

from your heart

record-scratching you mid-thought

your darkness now

a cowering varmint

exposed to my light

Where am I?

Crouched inconspicuously

in your periphery

just outta focus

jarring you

making you second-guess

the full clip of defiance

strapped to your lips

Even if I shed

my camouflage

you can't match wits with me

till you clean your weapon

steady your aim

control your kickback

I'm verbal-combat trained

snipe you speechless

from 10,000 feet

For your protection

Ensnare you

in a soft-power shakedown

with serrated edges

dissect the grisly

from your core

The poems in my barrel

are treble vocals

ringing in your ears

after melodic shots fired

blasting your discord

into harmony

producing a song of peace

the world

is waiting for you

to load into your spirit

and discharge as many rounds

as it will take

to end your war

on love

THE DOCTOR WILL SEE YOU NOW

These poems be

Band Aids and gauze

rubbing alcohol and hydrogen peroxide

antibiotics and spiritual flu shots

medicine cabinets in our tongues

We a different typuh doctor

Open us up

the entirety

of our oral narcotics

plummets out

spills noisily

all over your decrepit spirit

clanks and clatters

against your self-hate like

a piggy bank full

of loose change

bouncing off your septic thoughts

dislodging them

from your hacked brain

one bittersweet sentence

after another

I promise

even if you don't love the taste

it will sedate

the heathen in you

suppress your sabotaging symptoms

And ain't that whatchoo crave

anyway?

Relief from the virus

you been carryin'

your whole life

from exposure to

a contagion

of venomous language?

Choose your method

of healing

gone 'head

rifle thru our selection

take whatchoo want

use whatchoo need

You can't OD

on a poet's prescription

Stanzas save lives

in huge proportions

the bigger quantity you ingest

the better

Spread

The Parable

on your cumbersome

diseased plate

triple-layer our wisdom

smear it messily

among your fingers

lick them unabashedly

Fuck who's watchin'!

You self-soothin' right now!

Let the message

dissolve like capsule

slow-release around your mouth

Close your eyes

as the lesson swan-dives

down your throat

splashes epiphany

across your organs

clears pathogens

from your nervous system

Breathe deeply

through its reset

Now rest

Repair

And when you open your eyes

One of us

will be by your side

with enough vaccine

to make sure

relapse

is not

in your vocabulary
