NAPOWRIMO 7/30 (HAIKU): DEFLATE

They probably don't
notice you cuz your ego
is blocking their view

Sonnet #20 for February

STRIVE

Great way to love self is stay true to word
Always attempt to see commitments kept
Self-esteem lowers when tasks are deferred
Don’t conjure up excuses to accept

Empowerment ensues when you exert
Effort to tackle all matters at hand
Never let ego cause you to divert
Push past its mind games; show you’re in command

Life can be challenging, sometimes you’ll find
May not be able to get it all done
No need to feel defeat, kindly remind
You did the best you could do, so you won

Solid impression of self is top goal
Build it through taking good care of your soul

Sonnet #11 for February

WALK ON BY

You think you know how to walk in my shoes
Better than I do; your judgment is large
Let me crack your face; hear this shocking news
With your weak foundation you can’t take charge

Barely striding smoothly on your own path
But got the nerve to be directing me
I’m attempting not to serve you my wrath
Got me about to shriek like a banshee

I did not ask for your wack conclusions
Approaching like psychic with crystal ball
You need to clear up those grand delusions
Tend to your own unlaced shoes ’fore you fall

Quit making my life your freaking campaign
Or my foot in your ass you will obtain

Sonnet #2 for February

MAMA KNEW

The stress of her world is almost too much
Day after day she fights feelings of shame
She planned a life that she almost could touch
Now things are ruined and won’t be the same

At first the pressure wasn’t very strong
Seemed as if it was all under control
He showed his true colors before too long
Suddenly he was always on patrol

She and the kids can barely make a move
Without his questions and suspicious craze
Feels like she always has something to prove
It's been a nightmare getting through the days

If she had acted on mama’s advice
Maybe she wouldn’t be paying this price

MY SENTIMENTS EXACTLY

My Sentiments Exactly, my most personal compilation, was written over the course of about four years, while I was deep in the throes of major life changes and spiritual transformation. It's my favorite poetic work to date, and it features poems such as "Asunder" and "Time Management."

NATIONAL POETRY MONTH - 1/30: ASUNDER

It's the aftermath
of last night's
shrieks
accusations
and blaming

After they
dishonored each other
then
broke their promise
again
to never go to bed
stone-hearted
to never leave
more than
three inches of space
between them
during slumber

I'm sorry ... what slumber?
too much malignant
head chatter
desecrating their bond
loud enough to deaden
the love they professed
the previous morning
a rare moment
when they kissed
uttered sweet good-byes
but now it's
2am
and their mouths
are rancid
tongues mangled
from lashing
while the devil's
watching with glee
cackling heartily at
the ruinous discord
it has succeeded
in executing

You know it hates
these sissy-ass
marital unions anyway

The quote says
what God has
joined together
let no man
put asunder
yet
here they lie
with enough space
between them
to sleep
the elephant in the room
teetering on bedsides
fetal positioned
lips tightly pursed
arms defensively crossed
reek of enmity
pouring from the pores
in their backs
to each other

And
unless they realize
"man" in the quote
is THEM
and the devil
ain't nothin' but
a savage named Ego
alias THEM
they will never know serenity
and
these walls will howl
about never knowing
the peace
they were built
to surround
how
they're tired
of World War III
on rewind daily
tired
of being dismantled
by flying objects
how
the slamming of doors
every ten minutes
rocks them like
the Bay Bridge
in the 1989 quake
how
just like this couple
their foundation
is fractured
and
just like this couple
their days
are numbered
cuz
this couple
and these walls
will never
survive
emotional cancer
